State officials sound alarm over unlicensed door-to-door pest control services

ATLANTA — Georgia officials are urging residents to be careful when hiring pest control services.

According to the Georgia Department of Agriculture, there’s been an increase in reports of unlicensed people going door-to-door to solicit business.

Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper is warning Georgians to verify that anyone selling pest control services is licensed before signing a contract and said residents should request proof of valid licensing before agreeing to anything.

“I urge Georgians to follow our team’s guidance: before signing a contract, ask to see the seller’s state-issued Registered Employee or Certified Operator License. Pest control representatives are required to carry their license and present it upon request. If a license is not provided, contact the Georgia Department of Agriculture immediately, and our team will investigate,” Harper said in a statement. “This is a matter of public safety, as unlicensed operators may lack the training and oversight needed to safely handle pesticides and perform pest control services.”

The Dept. of Agriculture also reminded residents that the state’s Fair Business Practices Act requires that certain door-to-door contracted sales include a three-day right to cancel.

The law also requires that the ability to cancel be clearly shown in the contract so customers know their rights.

In 2026, agriculture officials said they have conducted investigations into 48 unlicensed operators.

If a salesperson is unable or unwilling to provide proof of their license, the Agriculture Department says residents should report it through the GDA’s online form here.
