Search is on for whoever shot 2 people, including boy, at Cumberland Mall

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A search is underway for whoever opened fire in a mall parking lot, shooting two people, one of them a young boy.

The shooting happened about an hour before Cumberland Mall was set to close Tuesday night.

Police say suspects in two vehicles opened fire and apparently a stray bullet hit two people in the parking lot, including a child.

“A mall, in Cumberland, you never would think this would happen, but it happens,” parent Latosha Deese said.

Cobb police said they rushed to the scene just after 6 p.m. Tuesday evening where they found a boy of elementary school age bleeding on a curb, apparently shot in the leg.

Cellphone video obtained by Channel 2 Action News shows a police officer and others giving the boy aid until paramedics arrive.

“That’s really sad man. I have kids too. That not good for anybody,” parent Sherff Suma told Channel 2′s Tom Regan.

Another man was also shot in the parking lot. He and the child were taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition.

Bullet shells and evidence markers littered the parking lot outside some of the mall’s restaurants.

Police say suspects in two cars fired at each other and left the scene.

The shootings are all the more nerve wracking following recent deadly mass shootings at Asian spas in Atlanta and Cherokee counties, and then at a supermarket in Colorado.

“I think it’s sad, really sad,” another woman told Regan.

Police haven’t released the names of the victims. Mall management told Regan they are cooperating in the investigation.
