ATLANTA ACTIVE SHOOTER: What we know about the suspected gunman

ATLANTA — Atlanta police have identified a man accused of shooting five people at a medical facility in midtown, killing one of them, as 24-year-old Deion Patterson.

On Wednesday, Patterson was arrested at a Cobb County apartment complex just before 8 p.m..

Channel 2 Action News has learned that Patterson was a Coast Guardsman until he was discharged in 2023.

Channel 2′s Sophia Choi spoke to Patterson’s parents, who said he was with his mother at the doctor’s office and asked for Ativan, but the doctors would not give it to him. Ativan is prescribed to treat anxiety disorders or anxiety associated with depression.

Patterson was previously arrested for possession of marijuana and probation violations in the mid-2010s.

The shooting unfolded at a Northside Hospital office just after noon on Wednesday.

Channel 2′s Michael Seiden was at the scene, where he saw hundreds of heavily-armed officers outside 1100 West Peachtree Street Northwest, a Northside Hospital facility.

Police said 39-year-old Amy St. Pierre was killed, and four other women were wounded. Three of the victims, who haven’t been identified, remain in critical condition.

Multiple agencies, including Atlanta police, Atlanta fire, MARTA police, Georgia Tech police, and the Georgia State Patrol, responded to the situation.

Patterson is facing one count of murder and three counts of aggravated assault.
