Woman walking to meet babysitter finds man shot to death in middle of metro park

ATLANTA — A mother who was taking her baby to meet up with a babysitter at Dean Rusk Park in southwest Atlanta found a man shot multiple times along a pathway.

She told Channel 2′s Tom Regan that she immediately called her boyfriend and 911.

“She said she saw a body. We saw him on the floor, and there was blood all over the place. He looked like he got shot in the face, in the head and the chest,” neighbor Jean Robert Dstine said.

Police and detectives spent several hours scouring the area near Morehouse College for clues and interviewing neighbors in hopes of learning a possible motive and identity of potential suspects.

Dstine believes the man was shot overnight, possibly around 1:30 a.m. Monday.

“Cause I heard some loud and crazy guns shots in the area,” Dstine said.

Dstine, who designs jewelry and clothes, said he planned to meet with the victim in the near future to sell him some clothing.

“I’ve seen him by the store. He talked to me. He asked me to make some clothes for him,” Dstine said.

Neighbors say the shooting is another senseless tragedy.

“It’s absolutely horrible. Violence, gun violence, street violence has become a norm. And someone has to stand up. It’s time to stand up as a people and do better,” neighbor and community activist Vanessia Thomas told Regan.

Police have not identified the victim. He is believed to be in his early 40s.
