Mail carrier caught in crossfire of shootout between two groups

ATLANTA — A beloved mail carrier got caught in the crossfire of a shootout while doing her job.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes spoke to neighbors who are praying for her recovery.

Witnesses said the mail carrier was hit a few times while she was delivering mail to an apartment complex in the Adamsville community.

She’s well known in the community, and police are still looking for the person who shot her and another innocent bystander.

Witnesses say the mail carrier’s name is Nelly Jones. Many people call her Miss Nelly.

“I’ve been knowing her since I was in 2nd grade, and I’m 27, so I just think it’s about time for Miss Jones to retire because it’s dangerous over here and it was just sad,” a neighbor said.

Neighbors in the northwest Atlanta apartment complex on Middleton Road are begging for a change after the shootout on Monday evening that injured a man who has lived there for a long time and Miss Nelly.

“I’m very cautious about coming to the mailbox because I always bring my granddaughter down here to check the mailbox, but I’m having second thoughts about that right now,” a neighbor said.
