‘I can’t control anybody else’: Former President of the Atlanta NAACP speaks out about resignation

ATLANTA — The head of the national NAACP said in a statement that leaders suspended Atlanta chapter president, Richard Rose.

“I can only control me. I can’t control anybody else,” said former NAACP President-Atlanta Chapter, Richard Rose.

“I submitted my resignation. I didn’t want to continue to fight with the national board,” Rose told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington.

In July, leaders with the national NAACP released a statement about Rose’s departure:

“On Friday, July 28th, 2023, the National Board of Directors of the NAACP voted to suspend the membership of Richard Rose for conduct inimical to the best interests of the Association.

This suspension occurred as a result of Mr. Rose’s failure to carry out his duties as an elected officer of the Association. The suspension applies to any office and/or affiliation with the NAACP held by Mr. Rose.”

Tuesday, Channel 2′s Audrey Washington asked Rose about the “conduct” mentioned in the statement. He said there was internal conflict between him and other members.

“I’m about the work and not about pleasing one person or the other,” Rose explained.

Later in the interview, Rose said there were other members of the NAACP who took issue with current NAACP-Atlanta president, Gerald Griggs.

“[They] didn’t believe in his leadership. I had nothing to do with that. That’s between Gerald and those members of the executive committee,” Rose said.

Channel 2′s Audrey Washington spoke with Gerald Griggs.

Griggs declined an on-camera interview but said he stands behind the statement put forth by the head of the national NAACP.
