ATLANTA — Georgians are standing in lines at convenience stores, hoping for luck at becoming a billionaire ahead of Wednesday’s drawing. The Powerball jackpot has reached $1 billion.
Watch the drawing on Channel 2 Action News tonight just before WSB-TV Tonight at 11 p.m.
Channel 2’s Linda Stouffer talked one on one with the CEO of the Georgia Lottery, Gretchen Corbin, who says rollover jackpots like this keep all the wins growing.
“Do you see an uptick in people taking their chances when the money is this big?” Stouffer said.
“Always,” Corbin said. “When the jackpots start to get really high, of course, we have players that come in. They’re excited. And we typically have our core players. And then there’s a big number like this, and lots of people want to jump in.”
Corbin said the current Powerball run has provided over $20 million for Georgia students.
These numbers support Georgia students. Since Georgia Lottery launched in 1993, it has sent 2.3 million children to free Georgia pre-kindergarten and helped 2.3 million college students with HOPE Scholarships.
That’s $31 billion for education since the lottery started.
And even if you don’t win the jackpot, you could be eligible to win a smaller prize.
“We’ve had a lot of secondary winners, so since this roll started, we know that over $7 million has been won by Georgians in secondary prizes,” Corbin said. “So tonight, if by chance you don’t win the jackpot, check your ticket because you may be surprised. You may have a $4 win. You may have $1 million win.”
Corbin says it’s an exciting time for the lottery.
“It’s an exciting time because we’re all going back to school,” she said. “Our pre-K students are going back to school. Our HOPE students in college are going back. It is just a good reminder, time to go play Powerball. Because we hope that you will win, but we guarantee that every time you play, a Georgia student wins.”
