Georgia DOT earns 4 national awards

ATLANTA — The Georgia Department of Transportation announced it had won four national awards for communications excellence.

GDOT tied with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for the highest number of awards earned by any state agency in the competition, which was judge by the agency’s peers.

The honors were presented during the 2026 American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Committee on Transportation Communications Annual Meeting.

The peer-judged awards recognize transportation communications across four categories: Special Events, Innovation Events, Writing and Graphic Design.

State officials said the 2026 wins were Georgia’s strongest performance in the national competition in more than a decade.

Entries are judged by fellow transportation communicators who evaluate work based on industry-specific challenges.

GDOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry said public messaging for state infrastructure projects was highly important for drivers and safety, praising his department’s work and efforts.

“Effective communication is essential to everything we do at Georgia DOT, whether we’re delivering a major project, introducing new technology or simply making sure motorists have the information they need to travel safely,” McMurry said. “Our Strategic Communications team works every day to make the work of this Department understandable and meaningful to the people we serve. To have that work recognized nationally by their peers in four different categories is a tremendous honor and a reflection of the talent and commitment of this team.”
