First Atlanta Pride event since 2019 sees huge crowds

ATLANTA — Thousands gathered at Piedmont Park on Saturday for the first Atlanta Pride in three years.

After a pause for the pandemic, crowds were anxious to return to the celebration.

“It feels amazing to be back and to be proud of who we are and just to be us,” Phillip Graner told Channel 2′s Candace McCowan.

This is the first time the festival has returned to its full glory since 2019, and for those who before the pandemic went year after year, Atlanta Pride has been missed.

“To be able to express who we are and to show the rest of the world that we are a part of humanity, just like everyone else,” said Dieter Sumer.

Businesses nearby were also excited to have the festival back, as lines were long outside bars and restaurants.

From the LGBTQ community to allies, people told Channel 2 Action News this is a place of celebration and love vital to the community.

“It’s also just a celebration of your identity. People can take a day, a month or even years. It’s just a celebration of, ‘Hey, you figured it out and now you can go show the world who you are,’’” said Ares Skaggs.

The festivities resume Sunday with a pride parade at noon and several performances.
