Fire contained at downtown Atlanta highrise, officials say

ATLANTA — A fire that broke out at a building in downtown Atlanta Wednesday afternoon has been contained, officials say.

The large black plume of smoke was visible for miles.

Landmark Properties, who operates the building, identified it as The Legacy at Centennial, which is set to open in Fall 2023 and is designed to tailor to Georgia State University students.

Viewers started to share videos and photos with Channel 2 Action News of the fire at the intersection of Ted Turner and Luckie streets.

Flames appeared to be shooting out of the roof of a building that is under construction.

Officials said, there was some rubber membrane that caught fire on the roof.

No injuries have been reported.

Landmark Properties released a statement on Wednesday afternoon that read:

We can confirm that there was a fire on the roof of The Legacy at Centennial around noon today. Atlanta Fire Department quickly responded fully extinguishing the fire. We can confirm that there were no injuries due to the fire.

We are investigating the extent of the damage but based on what we know at this time we do not expect any material damage to the building. We take safety on our jobsites very seriously and are appreciative for the quick response of the Atlanta Fire Department and first responders.

Georgia State Police said some of the surrounding streets are closed.

They have not said when the roads will reopen.
