ATLANTA — I-285 will close in both directions between Atlanta Road and South Cobb Drive, causing major disruptions and delays for drivers in Cobb County and the west side of Atlanta.
The Georgia Department of Transportation said the closure starts at 7 p.m. and will last until 5 a.m. Monday.
Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach reported this is a new stretch from previous I-285 shutdowns, running from Atlanta Road, where construction equipment is staged, to the next exit at South Cobb Drive.
GDOT is asking drivers to detour onto other metro interstates, including I-75, I-20, and the Downtown Connector.
Drivers who live off either exit have seen construction signs warning of the closure for both northbound and southbound lanes of I-285.
“I got caught off-guard the first time. So, I was sitting in traffic for an hour like, what is going on?” Dorian Weng said. “There are multiple ways to get around, and that’s super important. I come round, and Cumberland takes you all the way to South Cobb Drive.

Farooq Mohammed, a gas station owner near the interstate, said the closure could mean fewer customers.
“Little bit of impact for business. Little bit of a loss. If it’s closed, no customers coming on,” Mohammed said.
Crews are shutting down I-285 to rebuild and repave the road surface along the 14 miles of the Westside Freeway, which is aimed at making the ride safer and smoother.
“It’s bad. The potholes, the divots. So, it’s a necessary inconvenience, but yeah, I’m not looking forward to it all,” Ronda Shepard said.
GDOT has tentative full closures set for every weekend through the end of the year except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The next two planned closures in October are both south from Cascade to Langford Parkway.
