Atlanta police searching for taxi van stolen after driver shot and killed downtown

ATLANTA — Police are asking for the public’s help to identify a shooter they say left a taxi driver dead near Centennial Olympic Park this week.

Police received 911 calls about a person shot around 5 a.m. Tuesday at 437 Centennial Olympic Park Drive. Officers found a man shot outside an apartment complex off Hunnicutt Street. He was take to the hospital, where he died. The driver has not been identified.

Investigators determined that the victim was a taxi driver who arrived at the location a short time before he was shot.

Police say the suspect left the scene in the victim’s taxi, but later abandoned it. Police are still searching for the taxi.

Anyone who sees the vehicle is asked to call 911. Police said the taxi is a white Toyota van with National Cab Company signs and a taxi number of 0343.

Channel 2′s Kristen Holloway spoke with a neighbor who lives at the apartment complex. She said the gate has not been working.

“Our gate has been broken for the last two months,” said Jasmine, who requested not to use her last name.

Police believe the shooting happened as a result of an argument. Jasmine said the shooting was a shock and disappointment to her.

“Everybody is trying find their purpose in life. It shouldn’t always have to resolve to a gun,” Jasmine said.

Homicide detectives told Holloway as of right now that they are searching for one suspect.

The area where the shooting happened is just north of downtown Atlanta attractions.
