Atlanta among one of the best places for a staycation, new study shows

ATLANTA — If your wallet’s feeling a little tight and you’re looking still looking for something to help you unwind, apparently the Atlanta area is a great place for a staycation.

WalletHub compared cities across the country and Atlanta came in at No. 11 on their list for “2023′s best & worst cities for staycations.”

In calculating their list, WalletHub “compared 182 U.S. cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across three key dimensions: 1) Recreation, 2) Food & Entertainment and 3) Rest & Relaxation,” it said.

Other Georgia cities that made the list include Augusta at #78, and Columbus, at #106.

“When planning staycations, it is important to decide what you would like to do, and based on your location, the best time of year to engage in the plan,” said Gail Lamberta at St. Joseph’s University in New York.

While the prices of many things have gone down lately, many vacationers are still choosing to stay close to home during their time off.

“For some, a staycation is simply more affordable. Most people are surprised when they discover that there are many leisure experiences offered in their communities, and at an affordable price. That compounded by not having the cost of an overnight stay, and the general expenses of travel, has kept staycations a popular way to engage in healthy and desirable leisure experiences,” Lamberta said.

Some of the most popular staycation spots revolve around nature.

“Enjoying nature is one of the best things families can do affordably. Depending on the season, a day at the coast or beach could be rejuvenating in Summer, kayaking and canoeing in Fall and Spring, and hiking in the cooler months are all good options,” said Stephen Pratt, Department Chair of Tourism, Events and Attractions in the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida.

The Atlanta area and North Georgia are home to many great state and local parks, that have many miles of hiking trails and interesting things to see.

The top place for a staycation is, not surprisingly, Honolulu, Hawaii. The worst on the list? Chula Vista, California.
