‘Abbott Elementary’ tv show donates $1K to Atlanta elementary school teacher

ATLANTA — The award-winning ABC comedy “Abbott Elementary” is all about shining a spotlight on teachers.

The show recently chose an Atlanta elementary teacher to receive a $1,000 gift.

The show’s creator, Quinta Brunson, knows teachers take money out of their own salaries to buy items for their classrooms.

So she decided to take money out of the show’s marketing budget and give it to real-life teachers, including Alyson Farmery from Garden Hills Elementary.

Farmery is a kindergarten teacher and says teaching younger students is a passion.

“I want school to be a place where they feel safe, they feel loved, they feel seen. And I want them to come here and feel like they can be their best self,” Farmery said.

Farmery was chosen to receive $1,000 to fund dream projects in her classroom.

“I was in shock, it was really exciting to receive that email. The wheels started turning, like what are things I can get, what are the most important things, how do I prioritize?” Farmery told Channel 2′s Heather Catlin.

Farmery said she is going to use the extra money to focus on literature.

“We are a DLI (Dual Language Immersion) program where they learn half the day in English and half the day in Spanish,” Farmery said. “So we are trying to get some resources for them to bring home so they can learn in both languages.”
