1 person shot dead outside Catholic center near Atlanta University Center, police say

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are currently investigating a deadly shooting near the Atlanta University Center.

Police say the shooting happened behind the LYKE Catholic House on Beckwith Street near the university center just before 1:45 p.m.

Officers have confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that a 20-year-old man was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Clark Atlanta University officials identified the victim as Jatonne Sterling, a sophomore from Chicago who played for CAU’s baseball team.

Investigators do not believe the shooting was random. They say some kind of dispute led up to the shooting, but say the shooter is still on the run.

Detectives are still looking through surveillance footage and interviewing neighbors.

The Atlanta University Center is made up of three of Atlanta’s most prominent Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College.
