Police: 65 detained in connection with gambling operation in Alpharetta

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Dozens were arrested Monday night in what police say was an illegal gambling operation at a north Fulton County restaurant.

Police detained 65 people when they raided Pepperoni's Tavern but only 23 people went to jail. Investigators say this was the biggest gambling operation to hit Alpharetta.

Channel 2 Action News was there as undercover investigators escorted several suspects into a police van. Investigators say they turned the pizza restaurant on Old Milton Parkway into a high-stakes gambling house.

Police said those who set up the operation closed the restaurant late Monday night but re-opened the place only to invited guests.

"This operation was focused as a large gambling operation on the NCAA basketball tournament," said George Gordon with the Alpharetta Police Department.

Investigators say the suspects bet large amounts of cash on several upcoming basketball games.

Police said they also recovered several handguns.

Some people are facing misdemeanors, others are facing felonies.
