Suspect accused of gunning down pregnant woman driving down busy highway arrested in NC

TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — Police say they have made an arrest after a pregnant woman was shot and killed driving down a busy highway in Troup County.

Initially, investigators told Channel 2 Action News they thought the incident was just a bad accident. But when they looked closer, they saw the car was riddled with bullets.

First responders found Akeila Ware, 29, unresponsive and pinned inside her wrecked car Tuesday afternoon.

“This was a targeted, senseless crime,” said Stewart Smith with the Troup County Sheriff’s Office.

The bullets pierced Ware’s car door and struck her. She ran off the road and crashed into a tree.

“She was taken by ambulance to a Columbus area hospital in very bad condition and unfortunately she and her unborn baby were pronounced deceased at the hospital yesterday afternoon,” Smith said.

Deputies said the suspect in the case has been arrested in North Carolina and is now in police custody.

Investigators are holding a news conference Friday morning to release more details about the arrest and the suspect.
