South Georgia police chief police reported missing, found dead hours later, department says

COLQUITT, Ga. — A police chief from a small city in south Georgia is dead after being reported missing Wednesday, according to Bainbridge Public Safety.

Colquitt Police Department Chief Kenny Kirkland was reported missing Wednesday afternoon.

After an hours-long search by multiple law enforcement agencies, crews found a single-vehicle accident involving Kirkland’s car. The chief had died.

The City of Colquitt says Kirkland was a 30-year law enforcement veteran with 20 of those years being employed with the city.

He had been the Chief of Police since May 2020.

There is no word yet on the official cause of his death.

“Our sincere condolences are offered to our law enforcement brothers and sisters and staff of the Colquitt Police Department,” Bainbridge Public Safety said on Facebook.
