BACON COUNTY, Ga. — A south Georgia councilman and former school bus monitor has been arrested after authorities said he showed explicit material to children while working for the school district.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrested Jerry Alvin Sweat, 70, of Alma, on a charge of exhibiting harmful materials to minors.
The Bacon County School District Police Department requested the GBI’s assistance on Oct. 7 to investigate the allegations.
That same day, the BCSDPD asked the GBI to investigate allegations that Sweat displayed pornographic material to children under the age of 16 while working as a bus monitor.
Sweat, who represents District 3 on the Alma City Council, turned himself in on Tuesday, Oct. 13, and was booked into the Bacon County Jail, according to the GBI.
He was fired from his position as a bus monitor by the Bacon County School Board before his arrest.

The Bacon County School District said it became aware of an incident involving a district employee and immediately conducted an internal investigation, which resulted in the employee’s termination.
The district reported the incident to its police department and said it is cooperating with the GBI investigation.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Once it is complete, the GBI will turn over the case file to the Bacon County Solicitor’s Office for prosecution.
