Meyers, Colbert, Noah talk Trump tapes from Michael Cohen, the 'hitman' in 'fingerless gloves'

It seems late-night hosts let out a collective "Let's go to the tapes" when drafting Wednesday's programs. The recorded conversation between President Trump and Michael Cohen recorded by the president's former personal attorney fueled plenty of fodder for Seth Meyers, Stephen Colbert and Trevor Noah.

The conversation, held in 2016, included talk of a payoff to Karen McDougal, a former Playboy model who claims she had an affair with Trump, more than a decade ago.

"Late Night with Seth Meyers"

Meyers gave the tape "A Closer Look", likening the reported twelve recordings obtained by the FBI to "an Eagles box set."

The "Late Night" host mocked Cohen's choice of making the tapes. "You can't be a lawyer in charge of shady business dealings and also record everything," he said. "He's like a hitman who decides to wear fingerless gloves: 'I like to leave a calling card on all my victims: my fingerprints.' "

Meyers wondered why the president acted appalled in a tweet Wednesday morning, asking: "What kind of a lawyer would tape a client? So sad! Is this a first, never heard of it before?

"Why was the tape so abruptly terminated (cut) while I was presumably saying positive things?" he continued.

“What kind of lawyer would tape a client?" Meyers asked in response. "The kind of lawyer you would hire."

"Look at him," Meyers added, showing a photo of Cohen. "He never closes his mouth because he has a microphone under his tongue."

As for the debate over whether the president intended to pay with cash or check, Meyers wasn't buying Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani's declaration to Fox News that Trump would not have intended to pay with cash after setting up a corporation because "the president's not an idiot."

"See, what happened is you blew it right at the end there," Meyers said, " 'cause that excuse might've worked until you said 'the president's not an idiot.' "

"The Late Show with Stephen Colbert"

"Unlike Donald Trump, I know I'm being recorded right now," Colbert said, kicking off his monologue. "Because, folks, there's a tape," the comedian announced gleefully before clarifying, "not that tape, but still!"

During the segment dubbed “Stormy Watch: Karen McDougal Edition,” Colbert knocked“Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani, who insisted Trump said, “don’t pay with cash” on the tape.

"OK, that's important, 'cause that changes everything," Colbert said before going into his Trump impression. " 'Hey Melania, good news: when I cheated on you, I paid by check, so now we can declare my (marital indiscretions) a business expense.' "

Colbert said this raised the question of more tapes, for which he says Giuliani "almost had an answer" during his interview with Fox News, which included the phrase, "Don't quote me on that."

"Don't quote you on that?" Colbert said, puzzled. "You're on live TV. Does anyone on Trump's team know they're being recorded?"

"The Daily Show with Trevor Noah"

Noah also devoted time to the recording from Cohen, aka a "'Sopranos' background actor," in a NSFW segment.

Noah seemed amused by Trump's request on the tape that someone "get me a Coke, please!"

"Now, that is shocking," the "Daily Show" host began. "I never thought I'd hear Donald Trump say the word, 'please,' and to be honest, I feel a little bit bad for Coke because this is not the product placement they were hoping for."
