DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The DeKalb County Board of Education is set to consider naming Dr. Norman C. Sauce III as the finalist for superintendent of the DeKalb County School District during its Sept. 14 meeting.
The item is on the board’s agenda for a vote. If approved, Sauce would become the sole finalist in the search for the district’s next superintendent. The board is expected to take a final vote on Oct. 5.
Under Georgia law, the name of a superintendent finalist must be made public at least 14 days before a final vote.

“This is a significant moment for the DeKalb County School District and the students, families, employees and communities we serve,” board chair Allyson Gevertz said in a statement. “The Board has carefully considered the leadership qualities and experience needed to guide our District forward. We look forward to continuing this important process and to making a decision that reflects our commitment to providing strong, stable leadership for DCSD.”
Sauce has served as the district’s interim superintendent since November 2025, leading the school system through a period of transition while focusing on student achievement, operations and community engagement.

Sauce was appointed interim superintendent following the resignation of former Superintendent Dr. Devon Horton in October 2025.

Horton’s departure came after he faced legal troubles. In August, a grand jury indicted Horton on additional charges, including aggravated assault-strangulation and two counts of misdemeanor cruelty to children. The indictment alleges Horton strangled his wife in front of the couple’s two children in January.
After his October resignation, Horton also became the subject of a DeKalb County School District investigation related to decisions made during his tenure.
The DeKalb County Board of Education will meet Sept. 14 to consider naming Sauce as the district’s superintendent finalist. Additional information is expected following the meeting.
