COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — A former Coweta County school resource officer who was once recognized for helping children in need is now facing child molestation charges following a lengthy state investigation.
A Coweta County grand jury indicted the former sheriff’s deputy and school resource officer Mike McGuffey on Tuesday on five counts of child molestation and enticing a child, according to court records.
The indictment alleges McGuffey molested a child between August 2019 and March 2020.
Prosecutors allege McGuffey lured a girl to a gas station parking lot and a wooded area off Pete Davis Road, where he molested her.

Authorities have not released the victim’s age, and it is unclear whether she attended Smokey Road Middle School, where McGuffey previously served as a school resource officer.
The case began with an anonymous tip received by the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office in April 2025, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators said the tip alleged McGuffey made “inappropriate comments towards several female students” and had texted with at least one female student while employed with the sheriff’s office.
The sheriff’s office said McGuffey was placed on administrative leave the day after the tip was received.
Within three weeks, McGuffey resigned, shortly after investigators said they learned of criminal allegations.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case and conducted the investigation that led to the indictment.
McGuffey had been in law enforcement for more than 35 years, including more than 30 years with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office.
The GBI says this is an active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the GBI’s Regional Investigative Office in Midland at 706-565-7888, online, or by downloading the See Something, Send Something mobile app.
