LOS ANGELES — Atlanta-based rapper, activist, and actor Killer Mike, whose real name is Michael Render, said that after winning 3 Grammys and getting arrested Sunday night in Los Angeles, his biggest news happened Monday morning.

Render told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he got the news that his 21-year-old son has been matched with a kidney donor, which he has been waiting on for two and a half years.

The rapper quickly headed back to Atlanta as Pony Boy Render went into surgery.

“What sticks out to me the most has nothing to do with last night,” Render told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I woke up to a phone call that my son who’s been waiting on the kidney for the last two and a half years is on way to his hospital right now to get surgery, to get the kidney.”

Still, Sunday was a huge night for the rapper.

First, Render won three Grammy awards, including his first in more than two decades.

Shortly after the ceremony, he was detained Sunday inside the Cyrpto.com Arena.

Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Officer Mike Lopez said Killer Mike’s detention stemmed from an altercation inside the arena around 4 p.m.

LAPD said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was detained and handcuffed for a physical altercation on Chick Hearn Court. He was arrested and taken to LAPD Central Division, according to authorities.

In a video posted by the trade website The Hollywood Reporter, the rapper was escorted away in handcuffs by Los Angeles police at Crypto.com Arena.

LAPD confirmed that they detained Render and charged him with battery.

Render told the AJC that the focus should be on his wins, not on the arrest.

“Man, ain’t nobody talking about all that mess,” Render said. “I walked away with three Grammys, man.”

Radio veteran DJ Dyron Ducati with 104.1 KISS told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington that the arrest does not overshadow what he believes Killer Mike has done for the hip-hop community.

“For those who care and the people of Atlanta, we’re like, ‘Michael, congratulations. We love you,” Ducati said.
