Chicken truck crash closes busy metro Atlanta road for 7 hours

HALL COUNTY, Ga. — An early morning truck crash on a busy Georgia road unleashed a whole flock of live chickens on an unsuspecting community.

The road was closed for seven hours as crews worked the scene and investigated the crash.

The Hall County Sheriff’s Office said the crash happened around 5:11 a.m., when a truck hauling live chickens snagged a power line and pulled down a power pole on Main Street in Clermont.

The truck flipped and the live chickens were released all over the road and into the surrounding area, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies said their investigation into the chicken truck crash revealed that the truck’s driver, Ki Yeop Kim of Suwannee, fell asleep after turning from Shoal Creek Road onto Main Street, causing him to crash the truck into a power pole.

According to the sheriff’s office, that’s what caused the truck, owned by Wayne Farms, to turn over and spill its live chickens into the roadway and surrounding property, causing the road to close for several hours as crews cleaned up the area and repaired the power pole.

Deputies told Channel 2 Action News the road reopened just after 12 p.m.

HCSO said Kim was charged with running a stop sign and failing to maintain his lane. The Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) also assisted in the investigation.

Deputies said MCCD will be pursuing additional charges for the driver.
