COBB COUNTY, Ga. — The search is underway for a gunman after police said they shot someone outside a busy gas station in Cobb County.

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. at the Texaco station along Windy Hill Road near the Interstate 75 on ramp.

Sgt. Wayne Delk with the Cobb County Police Department told Channel 2's Justin Wilfon that several shots were fired during the situation, to include across traffic along busy Windy Hill Road.

Investigators said they initially thought the shooter ran from the scene but said late Friday night they now believe there was a getaway driver that helped the shooter escape.

“We actually had shells strike across the street,” Delk said.

“The information we have at this time is that they may have gotten into a vehicle that fled from the scene in that vehicle. We’re trying to confirm what kind of vehicle and if we have video of it,” Delk said.

Delk told Wilfon, at the last check the victim was still alive but had no other information of the victim’s condition.

Shortly before the police briefing, Wilfon watched as several police cruisers sped off from the gas station.

Delk said they got a tip from a witness but did not have any information about a suspect.

Because there was a getaway car, Delk was questioned if he believed the victim was targeted.

“It’s a possibility. We don’t know yet at this time,” Delk said.

The shooting happened just as the Atlanta Braves game was getting out at nearby SunTrust Park. Traffic was at a standstill around the shooting scene and the stadium.

Delk said he wasn’t sure if the shooting had a major impact on the traffic leaving the stadium but did say there was construction along the interstate and said traffic likely bottle-necked near the shooting scene with people trying to get on the interstate.
