The pests are a threat to honeybees and agriculture, which is Georgia’s No. 1 industry, the Georgia Department of Agriculture said in a recent social media post.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture’s Plant Protection team remains on the job working to eradicate the invasive pests.

The team found 1,310 hornets and 33 nests in September, deployed 32 new traps and checked 8,228.

“Be on the lookout for nests and ‘hawking’ behavior around beehives,” the state agency warned.

The hornets were first spotted in the Savannah area in 2023, where they continue to be found.

If you believe you’ve spotted a yellow-legged hornet nest, report it to yellow.legged.hornet@agr.georgia.gov.

“We urge the public to be cautious in the event they come across a suspected yellow-legged hornet,” the agency said. “If you can safely take a photo of the suspected yellow-legged hornet, we encourage you to do so to assist us with identification.”

The legs are partially or primarily yellow, but the color of the body and head can vary.
