The warning follows a State of Emergency declared by Gov. Brian Kemp that took effect Thursday, activating legal restrictions against artificial price hikes on essential goods and services.
Carr emphasized that state authorities will take action against businesses or individuals attempting to exploit storm preparations.
“In anticipation of Hurricane Isaias, we urge all Georgians to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and their families,” Carr said. “Unfortunately, criminals will take advantage of those impacted by severe weather and our office stands ready to assist anyone who thinks they have encountered a scam. Unfair and deceptive business practices won’t be tolerated and anyone artificially increasing costs on the backs of hardworking Georgians will be held accountable.”

Kemp previously issued an Executive Order for Petroleum Supply Disruptions that took effect Sept. 29. The price gouging restrictions specifically apply to goods and services needed to support preparation, response and recovery activities, including motor fuel, diesel fuel and other petroleum products.
Retailers are permitted to increase prices only if the change accurately reflects an increase in the cost of new stock or transportation, plus the average markup percentage applied during the 10 days immediately before the emergency declaration.
State law also provides increased protection for homeowners entering into contracts with contractors following natural disasters.
