GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Some Gwinnett County residents say they’re tired of doing a job they already pay somebody else to do.
Michelle Carlson says taking the cans out to the curb has become more than what she bargained for.
“We have a storm come through, and everything blows around. We all have to pick it up,” Carlson said.
Michelle and her neighbors in a Dacula subdivision say their trash collector hasn’t been collecting — at least not when they’re supposed to.

“Honestly, I don’t have a clue when they’re going to get it. Sometimes it’s trash. Sometimes recycling gets left out for day-after-day. Sometimes, my trash can is out there for five out of seven days in a week,” homeowner Steve Chalk said.
The county contracts with a handful of private companies to collect trash, recycling, and yard debris. In Chalk’s neighborhood, it’s Republic Services.
A county spokesman told Channel 2 there have been delays because of COVID-19. If a member of a collection crew tests positive, it can put the operation behind schedule.
Michelle Carlson says because she pays the county for the service, the county needs to fix this.
“They are ultimately the people who are hiring the private contractors. They’re the ones who should be making sure our trash is picked up,” Carlson said.
The county says Republic Services has been in constant contact with them during the pandemic, and is working on a plan to reroute some of their trucks to make sure they pick up on schedule.
