WARM SPRINGS, Ga. — Gov. Brian Kemp has ordered flags lowered to half staff Tuesday in honor of a Warm Springs police sergeant who was shot and killed in the line of duty last week.

Kemp ordered U.S. and Georgia flags at the State Capitol and in Meriwether, Fayette and Heard counties to be flown at half staff until sunset Tuesday in honor of Sgt. Christopher Durran Fisher.
“Georgia continues to grieve the senseless killing of Sgt. Chris Fisher in Warm Springs last week,” Kemp wrote in announcing the order. “As we hold his wife, children, and fellow officers in our hearts and prayers, I have ordered flags to be lowered at the State Capitol and Meriwether, Fayette, and Heard Counties tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8, in honor of his selfless service.”

Fisher, 36, was shot and killed late Sept. 1 while on duty in Warm Springs.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Fisher had just finished an unrelated traffic stop and was sitting in his patrol car in the parking lot of the Meriwether Country Inn when a pickup truck stopped beside him.
The suspect, 23-year-old Jimmie Lee Steverson, had been arrested by Fisher days earlier on marijuana and firearms charges and released bond. Authorities tracked him down in Anderson County, South Carolina, where he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Fisher joined the Warm Springs Police Department in May and was promoted to sergeant in July. He previously served with the sheriff’s offices in Meriwether, Fayette and Heard counties. Fisher also served five years in the U.S. Army.

Fisher’s mother, Vicki Lynn Haywood, spoke with Channel 2 Action News Bryan Mims on Friday as she visited the police department and the location where her son was killed.
“I just wanted to see where he worked, and it was such a big part of his life,” Haywood said. “I wanted to see where he was when Jesus took him. I just felt very drawn to come here.”
Fisher leaves behind his wife and two children. His mother says her son had wanted to serve others since he was a child.
Funeral services for Fisher are scheduled for Tuesday at Flat Creek Baptist Church in Fayetteville. The funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m.
