ROSWELL, Ga. — The Roswell Fire Department and the American Red Cross installed free smoke alarms in 34 homes in the Liberty Square subdivision on Sept. 19.
Roswell Fire said 11 teams went out from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. along Worthington Hills Manor, Worthington Hills Trace, Worthington Hills Court, Parkmont Drive, Liberty Knoll and Liberty Trace.
By the end of the event, teams had visited 161 residents and installed 101 smoke alarms from the American Red Cross, according to Roswell Fire.

Each visit took about 30 minutes and included a walkthrough of the home, new alarms where needed and a talk with residents about creating and practicing a home fire escape plan.
The Roswell Fire Department’s Community Risk Reduction Division and the American Red Cross picked the area using a community risk assessment that looks at factors such as the age of homes. Roswell Fire said smoke alarms usually expire after about 10 years and older homes are more likely to have alarms that need replacing.
“A working smoke alarm gives a family the time they need to get out,” Brian Wolfe, division chief of Community Risk Reduction, said. “Our Community Risk Reduction team uses data to plan our outreach across the city and events like this let us meet families where they live.”

“Everyone who took part came with one goal: making homes in our community safer,” Roswell Fire Chief Pabel Troche said. “I am proud of this team and grateful to the residents who welcomed us into their homes.”
State Farm and FEMA also supported the event.
