DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The GBI is investigating the third shooting involving police officers in 24 hours in the metro Atlanta area.
Channel 2's Aaron Diamant rushed to the scene Wednesday afternoon near Memorial College Avenue and Memorial Drive.
Police said in a news conference that two motorcycle officers stopped Jamarri Williams, 28, for a routine seat belt violation around 2 p.m.
The sergeant and officer who were involved in the shooting were not injured.
DeKalb County Police Chief James Conroy said Wiliams pulled his SUV into a parking lot. When the officers ran his driver's license, they learned there were warrants out for his arrest.
"Traffic stops are one of the most dangerous things we do," Conroy said.
The two officers are on administrative leave as the GBI continues to investigate.
"We do pray for (the suspect) as well, but it's always a trying time, because you never know," Conroy said.
NewsChopper 2 was over the shopping center, where crime scene tape was strung across the parking lot in front of a Home Depot and multiple officers and patrol cars were assisting in the investigation.
This is the third officer-involved shooting in metro Atlanta in less than 24 hours and the second on Memorial Drive in a matter of hours.
Police are currently investigating another officer-involved shooting at the ramp to I-20 on Memorial Drive in southwest Atlanta.
