COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — Multiple students from Northgate High School are hospitalized after a crash in Coweta County late Thursday morning.

The school district says it was informed by Coweta Emergency Management around 11:15 a.m. that six teenagers, all students at Northgate High School, were involved in a single-vehicle crash on Vaughn Road north of Brandon Lane.

Officials said the crash happened off campus.

A neighbor who did not want to be identified told Channel 2’s Michael Seiden that as soon as she heard the crash, she rushed outside and saw injured teens climbing out of the wreckage.

The Coweta County Sheriff’s Office confirmed deputies responded to the scene and assisted fire personnel and the Georgia State Patrol.

GSP says a male student who was driving a 2021 black Honda Accord was traveling too fast for conditions and ran off the side of the road while negotiating a right curve.

The neighbor says she wasn’t surprised to learn high school students were involved, adding that speeding by teenagers along that road is common.

“I was upstairs in my bonus room and all of a sudden I heard a bang and then my electricity went out, and I said, ‘God, something happened.’”

The car then hit a utility pole before coming to a stop against the base of a large tree, GSP said.

She says she rushed outside and found the six injured teens trying to get out of the wreckage.

“I could hear the kids in the car. They were trying to get themselves out, and I knew something was bad,” she explained.

She says her son called 911 while she checked on the teens, trying to keep them calm.

“I’m just trying to get them to sit down and be still so they don’t hurt anything else,” she said.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, and the students were taken to various Atlanta hospitals for medical treatment, according to the school system.

GSP said two girls had serious injuries and were airlifted. The extent of their injuries has not been released.

“I just want all the high school kids to know, don’t come through here. Don’t speed through here, bad stuff can happen,” she said.
