Ordained to the priesthood on June 1, 1996, Father John dedicated nearly three decades to serving the Catholic Church. He joined the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the summer of 2020, where he faithfully served as pastor, offering guidance, comfort, and inspiration to parishioners during both joyful and challenging times.

Those close to him say his ministry reflected Christ’s love through humility, compassion, and unwavering faith.

“He always sang and encouraged us to sing,” said church volunteer Ralph Bailey. “He would make sure we sang when he celebrated Mass.”

Church officials say Father John became ill with the flu while vacationing in Mexico City. He later developed pneumonia and died at a hospital there.

His passing comes as doctors across Georgia continue to monitor flu activity statewide. While hospitalizations are declining, medical experts say the outbreak has not yet peaked.

TRENDING STORIES:

At Northeast Georgia Medical Center, doctors report flu-related hospital admissions have dropped nearly 50% from early last month, when they peaked at around 90 patients. As of this week, the hospital reports 44 flu patients across its campuses, including six in intensive care.

Dr. Supriya Mannepalli, who specializes in infection prevention at the medical center, says flu cases continue to place a strain on hospitals across the metro Atlanta area.

“The most common patients are coming in with pneumonia from the flu,” Mannepalli said. “Some have secondary bacterial infections, and others require additional oxygen or respiratory support.”

Doctors say a circulating flu strain appears to be spreading quickly and causing prolonged symptoms, including high fevers and persistent coughing that can last a week or longer.

Health experts urge anyone experiencing shortness of breath, prolonged high fever, or altered mental status to seek emergency care, especially those who are elderly, immunocompromised, or have chronic medical conditions.

While some patients are becoming ill despite being vaccinated, doctors say the flu shot can still reduce the severity of symptoms and complications.

As parishioners grieve Father John’s loss, church leaders say they are holding onto the hope he often preached — faith, resurrection, and eternal life.

Funeral and memorial service arrangements will be announced in the coming days.

Parishioners are asked to keep Father John, his family, and all who loved him in their prayers.
