The fire broke out at Providence Green, a former electronics recycling plant that takes in computers, batteries and other electronic waste for recycling.
South Fulton Deputy Chief Jerome Byrd said investigators still do not know what started the fire.
The roof of the building has collapsed, and crews were working from ladder trucks to reach the source of the fire and control hot spots inside the structure.
“We’re continuing to try to make way inside the structure so that they can get to the source and the scene of the fire,” Byrd said.
The fire raised concerns about what may have been burning inside the facility. The Environmental Protection Agency warns that fires involving electronic waste can release hazardous pollutants, including heavy metals and acid gases.
But Byrd said South Fulton’s hazardous materials team tested the air and determined the fire was not a hazardous materials incident.
“This is not a hazardous materials call. This is not a hazardous material incident,” Byrd said.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the fire.
