Traffic lights installed at deadly intersection

ATLANTA — Traffic lights were installed Wednesday at the intersection where a pregnant woman was killed last May.

It has been almost a year since Angela Shields lost her daughter, Ke’anna Shields Bentley, and her unborn granddaughter at a southeast Atlanta bus stop.

Police say the driver who killed 21-year-old Bentley had a medical emergency that led to the crash.

Another person was killed at the same intersection just months after Bentley was killed.

Shields vowed to get traffic lights installed in place of the four-way stop sign at the intersection of Pryor Road and Amal Drive.

The location itself is a constant reminder of what she lost.

"My daughter and my grandbaby. That's all I can think about. Whenever I go by there I have to give them a kiss because I feel them," Shields said.

Shields told Channel 2's Carl Willis that she keeps a special place in her home to remember her daughter.

“Why did it take another person dead for y’all to see how dangerous that four-way stop sign is?” Shields asked. "My niece got spun around at that same intersection."

Bentley’s mother says a traffic light is all that she wanted and hopes the new installation will prevent another family from suffering the loss of a loved one.

"I had to get out of the car and shake their hands. They were finally listening to me and I wasn't going to stop," Shields said. "Maybe now, it will save some lives."
