Pregnant woman hit, killed had just married her high school sweetheart

ATLANTA — The mother of a pregnant woman hit and killed at a bus stop returned to the scene Friday where her daughter and unborn granddaughter died.

“My baby was gonna do big things,” Angela Shields said about her daughter, Ke’Anna. “She had everything lined up, everything laid out.”

Ke’Anna Shields was waiting at the bus stop at the intersection of Pryor Street and Amal Drive Thursday when she was hit by a truck. Her family says she was on her way to go pick up her cap and gown for graduation.

Police have not filed charges against the driver, 58-year-old Eddie Haynie, who sources say may have had a medical emergency.

Ke’Anna Shields’ husband, who is in the Navy, was on his way into town to spend the weekend with her when the crash happened. The high school sweethearts had just gotten married three weeks ago.

“She was so happy to be his wife and she was so happy to be having that baby,” her husband’s grandmother, Leola Bently, said.

This weekend was supposed to be full of celebrations for the 21-year-old and her family.

“Baby shower was supposed to be tomorrow, graduation (from nursing school) next week then the baby two weeks later,” her mother said.

Ke’Anna was eight months pregnant.

“Hard to get your arms around it. She was young, vibrant, had a lot of stuff to look forward to,” her mother said.

Including this weekend with her husband, Quent Bentley, who is stationed in Houston.

“He's supposed to be coming home tomorrow for a celebration of a baby shower, but now he's coming home to get ready to have a funeral,” his father, Dennis Bentley, said.

Dennis Bentley says he spoke to Ke’Anna hours before the crash and offered to give her a ride. He says she told him she would call him if she needed him.

He learned about her death while shopping for baby clothes.

“We've had some challenges before, and this is a big challenge but we'll get through it,” he said.

Dennis Bentley says his son took an emergency leave of absence from the Navy. He plans to pick him up from the airport once he lands Friday.

A vigil is planned at the crash site for Saturday night at 8.

Police say they are looking into whether or not to charge the driver.
