Drugs, loaded gun found inside ice cream truck, police say

CONYERS, Ga. — An ice cream truck driver was arrested after an alert teenager spotted him appearing to steal mail from the family's mailbox, police said.

Conyers police said that when they pulled the driver over, they found a lot more than just frozen treats inside the truck.

Kiaira Rogers, 13, told Channel 2's Christian Jennings that she saw the ice cream truck drive by, then turn around and park in front of her house on Hunting Creek Lane.

“I was up in my window just looking outside,” Kiaira said. “Then he pulled up in front of our mailbox and that’s when he stole our mail.”

Kiaira's mom, Jerri, called police. It didn't take long for officers to spot the van. Police said with the music and children crossing signs, the van was hard to miss.

Conyers police Sgt. Kim Lucas showed Jennings dash and body camera video from the officer who responded to the call Tuesday afternoon.

“You got any ice cream in there?” the officer can be heard asking the ice cream truck driver in the video.

Police say Cameron Callaway, 19, did have ice cream, but the bust was extra sweet. Officers showed Jennings the marijuana, scales and gun they seized from inside the truck.

“He could very well have been selling marijuana out of the ice cream truck,” Lucas said.

Along with the drugs, police also found Jerri Rogers’ package that she said she had a purple wig in it that she had ordered from eBay.

“It wasn’t going to match his skin tone or his hairdo,” Jerri Rogers said with a laugh.

She told Jennings that she's glad Callaway is in jail. She told Jennings that her older children had been suspicious of the van for weeks.

“What ice cream man delivers ice cream at six in the morning, three in the morning?” Jerri Rogers said. “My kids have been telling me, ‘He sells dope.’”

Police say Callaway has a felony charge included in his long criminal history.
