The Varsity president, family escape after fire destroys north Fulton home

ROSWELL, Ga. — The family who owns The Varsity escaped a house fire that happened overnight at their Roswell home.

The fire happened late Monday night off Prado Terrace in the Lakeside at Ansley subdivision just before midnight.

Fulton County property records show the 8,000 square foot house belongs to Gordon Muir, the president of the group that runs the iconic Varsity restaurants. Muir’s grandparents founded the original location off Spring Street nearly 95 years ago.

Channel 2′s Steve Gehlbach received the following statement from Muir.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our family home. Fortunately, our entire family emerged safely from the fire. We greatly appreciate everyone’s concern in this difficult time.”

Neighbors called 911 after they spotted smoke and flames coming from the home.

A Roswell fire spokesman said it only took the department minutes to arrive. When firefighters arrived, they said all nine family members had already made it out of the house.

Two people had to be treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. Their injuries were non-life threatening, according to officials.

The home had significant damage with firefighters battling hotspots throughout Tuesday morning. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
