GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County Public Schools has paused its planned school redistricting process effective last week.
The decision halts the fall 2026 redrawing of attendance boundaries that was scheduled to take effect for the 2027-28 school year.

District leaders announced the pause following recent shifts in student enrollment across the district. The hold provides an opportunity for GCPS to focus on using available space in existing schools before considering boundary changes. The initial multi-year, phased redistricting proposal was presented to the Board of Education in March 2026.
GCPS continuously monitors enrollment, school capacity, facility needs and long-term growth trends to maintain learning spaces across the district.
GCPS Superintendent Alexandra Estrella emphasized the importance of community involvement during the transition.
“We understand that school attendance boundaries are important to families and communities,” Estrella said. “This pause allows us to take a closer look at how we can best use our existing facilities while continuing to meet the needs of our scholars. We remain committed to keeping families informed and involved as we plan for the future.”

During the second semester of the 2026-27 school year, the district will host community conversations to gather feedback from families, staff and community members. District officials said input from these sessions will inform future redistricting discussions, with updates on next steps, timelines and potential impacts to be shared with families.
