ATLANTA — Drivers should be aware of a couple of major construction projects which will snarl their weekend drive over the weekend.
The Georgia Department of Transportation announced it will shut down a major exit in Sandy Springs, along with another location on I-285 on the west side of Metro Atlanta.

Channel 2’s Tom Jones spoke with drivers in Sandy Springs who are bracing for the worst.
Some drivers say it’s going to impact how they get around.
“I’m tired of it,” Lori Young said about the construction.
Young said it seems to go on every weekend.
“Every time I seem to go out, there’s traffic somewhere. I’m here in Sandy Springs and it’s somewhere,” said Young.
GDOT plans to shut down the Georgia 400 southbound Abernathy exit Saturday. The Abernathy exit is also known by drivers as Exit 5. It is near the North Springs MARTA Station.
The work is all part of a $4.6 billion express lane project on Georgia 400. Exit 5 will shift to two new temporary exits to provide continued access to Abernathy Road and Hammond Drive.
Young doesn’t think it will be that simple.
“We’re already congested here, right? So now everybody’s trying to find the same thing, how do we get around. So that’s just backing everything up,” she said.

GDOT also announced it will shut down two lanes of traffic in each direction on I-285 between Cascade Road and Lankford Parkway starting Friday until Monday morning.
Drivers say the construction interruptions are just part of what goes on in a large metro area.
“I think it’s the nature of the beast when so many people move over here. We’re trying to all figure it out together, right?” one man said when asked about the Sandy Springs project.
GDOT says it expects to complete the 16-mile express lane project on Georgia 400 in five years.
The I-285 lane closures are expected to end by 5 a.m. Monday.
