Gwinnett officer shot suspect armed with knife, police say

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Gwinnett County authorities are responding to an officer-involved shooting.

According to Gwinnett County police, the shooting occurred at the 6000 block of Lockridge Drive NW in a subdivision near Peachtree Corners.

The police tape surrounded the home where investigators could be seen coming in and out, and the Mobile Crime Scene Command Center was parked in front.

Police said officers were called to the home due to the local crisis team requesting assistance with a mental health situation.

Police told Channel 2’s Courtney Francisco that’s when 19-year-old Chris Richard came around the corner and charged at officers with a knife, and that’s when an officer shot the suspect.

According to GCPD, while backing up, the officer fell off the porch. He was not harmed. He’s expected to be OK.

Richard was taken to the hospital and is currently listed in critical condition, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The investigation is ongoing.
