Fire sparks in woods behind metro Atlanta apartment complex

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — DeKalb County firefighters are working to put out a fire in the woods behind an apartment complex.

The fire started early Thursday morning behind the Dunwoody Glen apartments off Peachtree Industrial Blvd. It is covering a couple of acres in the woods, according to fire officials.

DeKalb County Fire Battalion Chief Steven Vickery says the fire’s location is making it a challenge for his firefighters.

“It’s in a really bad spot. The fire is smack dabbed in the middle of the woods that’s really hard for us to access. So, at this point, we’re trying to control it by doing break lines around it,” he said on Channel 2 Action News This Morning starting at 4:30 a.m.

The Georgia Forestry Commission is also on the scene with special equipment to help DeKalb firefighters get closer to the fire. The battalion chief added there are multiple engines in the area as a preventive measure in case the fire spreads.

“It doesn’t take much for a small fire to become a big fire. And that big fire to become a bigger fire. Luckily, all said and done, the fire was contained to a certain area that was away from exposures,” Vickery said.
