FDA clears way for women to buy birth control over-the-counter

ATLANTA — The Food and Drug Administration has cleared the way for women to buy a daily birth control pill without getting a prescription from their doctor.

Channel 2’s Candace McCowan spoke with Piedmont Healthcare doctor Jayne Morgan about the decision.

The Opill is the first over-the-counter birth control approved birth control pill and was approved by the FDA as of Wednesday.

“Just like any other over-the-counter prescription, there are warnings on the bottle. People can make their decisions with regard to how we can move forward,” Morgan said. “Women are intelligent enough to make those decisions...”

Morgan said that more and more drugs like this could soon become available over the counter as more data becomes available.

The FDA says studies showed that consumer understanding of information on the Opill drug facts label was high overall.

The timeline for the availability and price of the Opill will be determined by the manufacturer.
