Deputies walked neighbors to their homes around 10:00 pm Wednesday night.
“Drop the gun and come out of the house. It’s not worth losing your life over,” said Sway Gates.
Santresa Hall said the man inside the home is her uncle, though police have not released his name.
“There’s not a lot of help for people with my skin color that suffer from mental illness and mental disabilities, and when I saw all the trucks and everything going down, the first thing I could think of is, ‘Oh, my God, they’re going to hurt him,’” said Hall.
Negotiators are still trying to get him out of the home safely.
The DeKalb County School District confirmed that nearby Redan Middle School was on lockdown due to the activity.
