Chamblee Police Chief Michael Dieppa said officers were called to Walmart for a shoplifting call. When they arrived, they confronted the man who was actively shoplifting and had a struggle with him.

He says the suspect then ran to the parking lot of The Oliver apartments across the street. When officers confronted him again, shots were fired and the suspect was shot and killed.

One officer suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene. Dieppa clarified that the officer was not shot.

The suspect’s identity has not been released.

Dieppa said that Chamblee’s last police shooting occurred in February 2024 after a man was reported stealing from the same Walmart.

The suspect ran from the officer who was trying to talk to him before pulling a machete out of his waistband and trying to attack her. That’s when police say she shot him.

Channel 2 Action News reached out to Walmart’s corporate office for a statement. They declined to offer one and pointed us to local law enforcement.
