DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — The Georgia Department of Public Safety shared its condolences with the family of a young girl who died in an overnight crash on Interstate 20.
According to DPS, Kalayia Tolbert, a 7-month-old, died after a multi-vehicle crash Saturday night.
The Georgia State Patrol said a trooper had seen an Audi sedan driving at about 110 mph in a 60 mph zone on I-20. The Audi driver’s headlights were off while he was “recklessly weaving through traffic,” GSP said.

When the trooper turned his emergency lights on to do a traffic stop, the Audi briefly pulled onto the shoulder before speeding up and starting a high-speed chase.
GSP said the driver, later identified as Cameron Kemp, 33 of Covington, kept going east on I-20, exiting at Candler Road, then getting back on the interstate heading toward Wesley Chapel Road.
While exiting at Wesley Chapel Road, Kemp lost control of the vehicle, hitting a guardrail and crashing into multiple vehicles.
In total, GSP said 10 vehicles were involved in the crash.

State troopers at the scene said they immediately started providing medical assistance to the injured, with one car having three infants inside. All three infants were taken to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, but Kalayia died from her injuries.
Kemp was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he also died of his injuries.
Investigators learned that Kemp was driving the Audi with a suspended license and two active warrants out for his arrest, including for probation violation and failure to appear in court.
Kemp also had a prior incarceration with the Georgia Department of Corrections from an aggravated battery case, GSP said.
Addressing the result of the chase, DPS said it “recognizes that incidents involving pursuits, particularly those resulting in the loss of innocent life, raise serious concerns within the communities we serve.”
They asked the public to keep Tolbert’s family in their thoughts after the tragic loss of life.
“No traffic violation, attempted arrest, or enforcement action diminishes the tragedy of a child losing her life,” DPS said. “Our responsibility now is to ensure that the circumstances surrounding this incident are thoroughly investigated while continuing to support those affected.”
