Metro Atlanta school board chooses interim superintendent

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — The Coweta County Board of Education has appointed Shanna Downs as interim superintendent of Coweta Schools.

She replaces Superintendent Evan Horton, who is retiring later this year.

Downs will transition into the school system’s leadership team ahead of Horton’s departure, filling the interim position under a contract approved by the board.

Downs, a Senoia resident, brings 30 years of experience in Georgia education to the post.

She currently serves as executive director of the West Georgia Regional Educational Service Agency. She previously served as superintendent of Gilmer County Schools from 2015 to 2021.

Downs will begin her duties on Nov. 1, working alongside Horton until his retirement takes effect Dec. 1.

Her interim appointment runs through June 30, 2027.
