Inmate dies after experiencing medical condition inside metro Atlanta jail

COBB COUNTY, Ga. — An inmate who was being held at a metro Atlanta jail since last year died Tuesday, according to the sheriff’s office.

Martin Floyd, a 42-year-old detainee at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center, was pronounced dead at 12:26 a.m. Oct. 6 at Kennestone Hospital, according to the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.

Medical staff evaluated Floyd on Oct. 5 and found his vitals were well within normal range.

Late that night, other detainees alerted deputies that Floyd was experiencing a medical condition. Detention center medical staff and first responders immediately began lifesaving efforts, but he could not be resuscitated.

Floyd had been held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center since June 2025, the sheriff’s office said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was notified following the incident but declined to conduct an investigation.

In keeping with policy for all in-custody deaths, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit will conduct an investigation into the incident.

The Cobb County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the official cause of death. Officials confirmed that Floyd’s family has been notified.
