COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A Cobb County middle school student is facing multiple charges after police found a gun at school.

The incident happened on Tuesday at Campbell Middle School.

The district said its safety protocols worked. Parents are asking how a student got a gun inside the school in the first place.

“Second week into school, especially at a school, you know, in a community, how are they getting them in?” Brittany Chapman asked after hearing about the incident.

The district told Channel 2’s Michael Seiden that another student alerted administrators, who confiscated the gun and took the student into custody.

“I just think it’s a little crazy because I went there, and I mean nowadays, stuff like that happens, so it’s kind of normal, even though it shouldn’t be,” former Campbell Middle School student Valeria Soto said.

In a letter to parents, the principal said the gun was “not used in any threat against students, staff or campus.”

The district said its investigation is ongoing, and the student is facing multiple charges. But because of the student’s age, officials are not releasing more details.

The district also said it has multiple layers of security, including more than 80 trained officers and vapor wake canine teams at every high school.

But those canine teams are not deployed at every middle school.

District officials said students and staff did what they were trained to do, allowing them to respond immediately and secure the situation.

But Chapman said incidents like this have become far too familiar.

“It almost feels like this is not surprising. It happens very frequent now. So, it’s just like, what are we gonna do to stop it?” Chapman said.

Parents, teachers and students say they are just grateful no one was hurt.
