ATHENS, Ga. — The University of Georgia is welcoming 6,250 first-year students to campus for the Class of 2030.
The incoming class was selected from a record pool of 51,600 applicants, the university said in a statement.
Students gathered in Sanford Stadium yesterday for UGA’s Freshman Welcome event to mark the start of the academic year.
The event launched orientation activities for the incoming cohort as campus prepares for instruction.
In-state students make up more than 80% of the incoming class, totaling more than 5,000 Georgia residents, the university said.

These students represent 460 Georgia high schools across 143 of the state’s 159 counties.
The class also draws representation from across the country and around the globe. Incoming first-year students hail from 43 states, the District of Columbia and 23 nations.

Academically, the Class of 2030 includes more than 220 Georgia valedictorians and salutatorians.
The group achieved an average weighted high school GPA of 4.2, an average SAT score of 1360 and an average ACT score of 31, after completing an average of 12 Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or dual-enrollment courses.
University of Georgia President Jere W. Morehead spoke about the enrollment and the institution’s role in higher education.
“Providing an exceptional education for the people of Georgia is central to the University of Georgia’s mission as the state’s flagship university,” Morehead said. “The Class of 2030 reflects that commitment. We are proud to welcome talented students from every corner of our state, as well as many remarkable scholars from across the nation and around the world who further strengthen UGA’s outstanding learning environment.”
Classes at the University of Georgia are scheduled to begin Monday.
